Emergency services in Australia are bracing for a fire season supercharged by flash droughts, which accelerate moisture loss from soil and vegetation faster than creeping droughts. Research by Dr Abhirup Dikshit and his team at the University of New South Wales’ Climate Change Research Centre suggests that flash droughts are changing the game when they overlap with prolonged droughts. Fires during such overlaps were 65% larger, spread 35% faster, and burned 19% longer than their counterparts in normal conditions or isolated standard droughts.

According to Dr Dikshit, a sharp “turning point” occurred after 2002-2003, when flash droughts began accelerating. This wasn’t just due to increased temperatures; the hotter atmosphere itself became more active in pulling moisture out of vegetation. As Greg Mullins, a former commissioner of Fire & Rescue NSW and founder of Emergency Leaders for Climate Action, notes, “Those heatwaves, over 35 degrees, very low humidity, and strong winds, they draw the moisture out of vegetation really quickly.” Even relatively wet winters can’t protect against these sudden droughts.

The implications are far-reaching. The United Nations World Meteorological Organisation has warned that the El Nino forming is likely to be the strongest on record, extending into 2027. While there’s no direct correlation between El Nino intensity and Australian conditions, hotter and drier temperatures will undoubtedly exacerbate flash droughts. As a result, emergency services are preparing for the worst.

Victoria is already factoring in flash drought conditions, with Alen Slijepcevic, Deputy Chief Officer of the CFA, acknowledging the rapid drying’s impact on vegetation and bushfire risk. But Australia isn’t alone in its struggles; Europe has faced similar horrors, with over 300,000 people evacuated due to heatwaves that rolled across the continent.

Australia’s experience should serve as a wake-up call for policymakers worldwide, highlighting the need for proactive measures to mitigate these risks. Hazard reduction burns can’t keep pace with flash droughts; emergency services are preparing for the worst. The CSIRO notes that there’s enough heat in the system to sustain a prolonged El Nino, which will amplify climate-related disasters.

A stark reminder of the ocean temperatures’ role in amplifying climate-related disasters is the 8-degree temperature anomaly lurking beneath the surface – enough to fuel a prolonged drought. We’re not just talking about fires; we’re talking about an entire ecosystem teetering on the brink.

As Mullins cautions, “We have never had ocean temperatures anything like it, and the implications are really, really scary.” The flash droughts and super El Nino combination is creating a perfect storm of conditions ripe for catastrophic wildfires. This summer will be particularly treacherous; emergency services are preparing for the worst.
