The Drought Within: Flash Droughts Are Spinning Out of Control Emergency services in Australia are bracing for a fire season supercharged by flash droughts, which accelerate moisture loss from soil and vegetation faster than creeping droughts.
This phenomenon has been gaining momentum since 2002 2003, with scientists only recently paying attention to its impact on fire behavior.
Research by Dr Abhirup Dikshit and his team at the University of New South Wales' Climate Change Research Centre suggests that flash droughts are changing the game when they overlap with prolonged droughts.
